St. Joseph spent a much of his time waiting.
Waiting to wed Mary.
Waiting to journey to Bethlehem.
Waiting in Egypt until it was safe to return to Israel.
Waiting for God to speak to him again in a dream.
That is how we should be spending our Advent waiting.
Not just sitting passively, but waiting as we go about our lives.
Waiting and preparing.
Even though Joseph was waiting for God, he had much to accomplish.
A family to take care of, a job to do, a child to raise.
Advent is a four week journey of hopeful waiting.
We don’t just pass through Advent, we prepare and hope.
Our theme this year for Advent is Waiting in Joyful Hope.

Prayer for Advent - Pope Francis
Let us open our hearts to receive the grace of this Advent season,
Which is Christ himself, whom God our Father has revealed to the entire world.
Where God is born, hope is born.
Where God is born, peace is born.
And where peace is born, there is no longer room for hatred and for war.
God alone can save us and free us from the many forms of evil and selfishness in our midst.
Let us welcome into our lives God’s mercy, which Jesus Christ has bestowed on us, so that we in turn can show mercy to our brothers and sister.
In this way, we will make peace grow!
Prayer to St Joseph: (Pope Francis)
Saint Joseph, you who always trusted God, and made your choices guided by His providence, teach us not to count so much on our own plans, but on His plan of love.
You who come from the peripheries help us to convert our gaze and to prefer what the world discards and marginalizes.
Comfort those who feel alone and support those who work silently to defend life and human dignity. Amen.
